Rose Parade

On Jan. 1, 2010, a new century began for the Boy Scouts of America, and with it came an invitation to the nation to experience Scouting like never before. Kicking off the celebration was the BSA's participation in the Tournament of Roses Parade, with a float entitled: “Celebrating the Adventure, Continuing the Journey.”

More than 300 Eagle Scouts represented the BSA as they marched beside an adventure-filled float like no other, complete with Scouts camping, hiking, rock climbing, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, and enjoying the thrill of “flying” along a zip line. Keeping with the parade theme “A Cut Above The Rest,” each Eagle Scout represents the highest achievements of Scouting, and each has a powerful story to tell. The Boy Scouts 100th Anniversary Youth Ambassador and 2 millionth Eagle Scout, Anthony Thomas, travelled from Minneapolis to Pasadena to participate in the inaugural activities.

Thank You for Your Membership Help in 2009
Thanks to the efforts of all of our leaders, the Northwest Suburban Council experienced growth in youth membership in 2009!!

A lot of people did a lot of work so the council could make that short statement, and so that more youth would gain the benefits that the Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Venturing, Exploring, and Learning for Life programs have to offer.

The Northwest Suburban Council ended 2009 with a decrease in the number of Cub Scouts but an increase in Boy Scouts, Venturer, Exploring, and Learning for Life membership.

In order to make 2010 a successful for membership, we plan to continue our grass-roots efforts and stick to the basics, and we ask that every Cub Scout, Boy Scout, and Venturing leader help by:
  • Keep recruiting year-round
  • Have special spring and fall recruiting events
  • Continue to provide a quality program that attracts new youth and keeps the youth you have already registered.
  • Encourage your youth to recruit their friends and peers to join
  • Take advantage of any special recruiting incentives the council offers from time to time. A good example is a special collector's edition Centennial Recruiter's Patch available to youth who recruit their friends.
Keep your recruiting plans simple and constant, and remember to ask your youth to invite their friends.

Thank you for making 2009 such as success for membership, and I look forward to working with you in n2010.

    Ray Okigawa
    Group Vice President, Membership

    Race to 2010

    One Amazing Race

Pinewood Derby cars representing every council will race across America using Geocaching. The cars will be Travel Bugs, moving from cache to cache across America. Scouts and Scouters can track their car's progress, read posted comments, and log the miles it travels on Geocaching.com. The finish line? Fort A.P. Hill in Virginia for the 2010 National Scout Jamboree! All of the Pinewood Derby cars that arrive at the Jamboree will be displayed in a special Geocaching area in ¯Technology Quest.? Prizes will be awarded for the Pinewood Derby cars that travel the farthest, pass through the most hands, or have the most creative routes. But if your car doesn't make it to the Jamboree, don't worry. You're still eligible. Geocaching.com will log how many miles each car travels. So, we'll know if it went the distance — even if that distance doesn't lead it to Virginia. After the Jamboree, we'll release the cars again to continue their race … around the world.

How can you enter a car? The race start is March 6, which means we need to select a NWSC representative by mid February. Cars from this year may have yet to run in their Pack and certainly not in District and Council races but that doesn't mean that any car can't be considered for representation. Cars from past years are certainly eligible for entry. Owners of cars will need to email pictures of their cars to be considered for entry in the race. Obviously speed on a track is not a factor, but craftsmanship and sturdiness will be the factors taken into selection. Cars with external attachments may not withstand the rigors of traveling cross country in the back packs of the Geocaching community.

Once a car is selected, it will need to be collected and the NWSC Travel Bug dog tag will be attached to it along with a note of the car's origin and destination. Each Travel Bug has its own "online diary" that follows its movements from cache to cache. Players will pick up and drop off Travel Bugs at Geocaching.com, capturing their real world travel adventures. The tracking number will help people to find the Travel Bug's personal Web page to read and log comments.

Please understand that it will be a miracle if you ever see your car come back to you. Consider it to be like a message in a bottle: Tossed in the ocean for destinations unknown and never ending.

Please email photos of your car to Tony Skiroock, NWCS Get in the Game Geocaching Chair, at skiroock@sbcglobal.net . Photos must be received by February 20, 2010.

    National Venturing Event

The Venturing Officer Association of the Greater St. Louis Area Council is proud to announce that the Fall Fun Rally has been designated as the first National Venturing Event. The council is proud to sponsor this event and to open it up to Venturers from across the country to attend.

The Fall Fun Rally is the largest Venturing event held each year in the country. The Fall Fun Rally is in its 37th year. We have the facilities, the staff, and the experience to host several thousand Venturers for this 3-day event. In 2008 it was the Central Region's 10th Anniversary event for Venturing. Venturers from throughout the Central Region attended. This event is centrally located in the USA.

The Fall Fun Rally is a youth lead event. The Council's V.O.A., the 9 District V.O.As, and hundreds of other Venturers staff the event each year. Venturing is many things, but of uppermost importance is youth leadership development. Planning for the 2010 event started at last year's event. This is the first time that a National Venturing event is being done and it is the youth of the Venturing program that are doing it. We are honored to take on this endeavor. We thank our council and the National Office for the trust they have placed in us to accomplish this unique opportunity. We hope that this will be the start of more and bigger future National Venturing Events, but today's good news is that the first one is on the way. So let's get excited about it!

    Haiti Relief Efforts

Power of Scouting in Haitian Relief Efforts

The news coming out of Haiti is very grave. So many citizens are missing or are in need of immediate care. "Our hearts and prayers go out to those suffering at this very difficult time," said BSA International Commissioner Jim Turley.

There is one small beacon of hope. World Scouting has been in contact with a member of the Scouts and Guides of France who happened to be in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, during this horrific earthquake. "This Scouter reports that our brother and sister Scouts are helping in the relief effort. No one should ever underestimate the power of Scouting! Be Prepared are not just words on a piece of paper. Rather, they are a call to action," explained Turley.

Agencies trained in disaster relief are already on the ground in Haiti. Additionally, the U.S. is sending military troops and supplies to further assist rescue and relief efforts. But there are still a number of ways members of the BSA can help in Haiti. The biggest need right now is financial resources to purchase emergency supplies; later it will be to help rebuild once the emergency of the coming days has passed.

The most efficient way to meet immediate needs is through your local American Red Cross Chapter. The BSA has a long-standing relationship with the American Red Cross and has every bit of faith that monetary donations will be put to use in the most effective way.

Also, the World Organization of the Scout Movement is accepting donations to meet immediate needs. BSA members may visit its Web site at: http://www.scout.org/..../solidarity_with_haiti

For rebuilding projects, our members are encouraged to make contributions to the BSA's World Friendship Fund. All monies collected here will be set aside for future projects requested by the Scout Association of Haiti. That's what we do in Scouting. These are our friends, our fellow Scouts. They need our help. On my honor, I will do my best! is a pledge that each of us has taken as a Scout."

NATIONAL HALL OF LEADERSHIP DEADLINE EXTENDED

The 100th Anniversary National Hall of Leadership is an opportunity for anyone to recognize outstanding leadership by a Scout, registered leader or Scouting volunteer who made a significant difference in the life of another by the extraordinary service they have given and the Scouting virtues they have modeled.

Nominations can be submitted until April 2, 2010, the 100th Anniversary of Scouting. Nominations are submitted on line in the form of a story that is 450 words or less describing why the person of your choice is deserving of this one time honor. Our Council will select 12 top nominations for inductees to the National Hall of Leadership. We will then feature one honoree per month during the 2010 celebration. One inductee will be selected from each BSA council and will be announced July 31st as part of the 100th Anniversary events at the National Scout Jamboree at Fort A.P Hill, Virginia.

It truly benefits Scouting in every community when we gather and share these stories of Scouting leadership making uncommon differences through very common acts of service. We need your help inviting individuals in every community to share their stories through National Hall of Leadership nominations.

Submit nominations within the National Hall of Leadership section of www.Scouting.org/100years If you have questions or want a unit , District or Round Table presentation please contact Al Wilson NWSC National Hall of Leadership Chairman 847-259-9194 or Email alwilson100@msn.com or alwilson100@comcast.net.

    Thank you Jim

Thank you – the Board, Members at Large, and Charter Organization Representatives for your vote this evening, not just for myself but for the entire slate of leaders.

I personally would like to recognize the Past Presidents – those here this evening & those who we've heard from. You have lead us to the door of a new century---- To Jim, ...thanks for the time and patience you have afforded me this past year. Your leadership and mentoring is truly appreciated.

Tonight is a historical time ---
    1) the cross into the next 100 years of Scouting
    2) the 1st female President of NWSC

I am honored to be a steward of your trust as we begin the next century of Scouting.

I am humbled by the dedication of our leaders and inspired by our Scouts. As your President, I promise two things: 1) Be Prepared and 2) To Do My Best. Be Prepared for meetings, challenges, and the decisions that will need to be made. To Do My Best to represent this Council and to be accountable and responsible to you the Board, our Leaders, Professionals, our Charter Organizations, Parents but most importantly to our Scouts. For it is truly them we serve.

I can not do the work alone. Together ---all of us---make up the team. We will work as a team and succeed as a team—in Membership, Finance, Program and Unit Service. We will not always agree ...we all have different roles, walk different paths, view our challenges differently, but we will come together in consensus. The Group Vice Presidents are empowered to guide, create, and direct the program of NWSC-----by keeping the Values, Vision & Mission as our goal ---we'll arrive at the solutions together.

It is our task to administer the business of NWSC with fiscal responsibility, sound judgment and set the bar of performance higher. Our roles calls us to act ---the solutions of the world today have a start here in Scouting. Our Scouts...and our Eagles ---will be called upon to be the leaders of tomorrow. TODAY we all must be the roles models and guardians of quality.

Together, we must look to our communities and extend the opportunity to our youth , invite parents to actively participate and share time with our Scouting family, train our leaders ---100%-, to be caretakers of the quality programs, be provide financial sustainability for the Council, and give service to our units and Charter Organizations.

In today's economy and times, we have to look to and engage our communities for mutual cooperation in helping to solve the needs of our growing and changing demographics. We will continue to identify and connect with our businesses, service groups, and elected officials to develop and create beneficial programs that support all our neighbors.

We have our challenges ahead but I have worked beside you during OA Fellowship Weekends, Camp-o-rees, Summer Camps, and our (extensive ) meetings. I know the talent, skills, and strengths each of you posses....you have the solutions---Together we'll work to success.

We represent the nation's première youth program of character development and values based leadership---I am proud of that and fortunate to have you beside me. I humbly accept this term as NWSC President....Together we'll lay the cornerstone of the next century of Scouting. I'm excited and look forward to this part of our journey.

    Thank you....

As my first official item of business....(check list if any to remind?) I wish you good night, thank you again, and safe travel.

A New Century for the BSA

This month, we celebrate the 100 year anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America. We, the Scouts, parents, leaders, Board, Chartered Organizations, and professionals of the Northwest Suburban Council, are part of a rich history and more importantly, we are the cornerstones of the next century. Thank you for being a part of this great moment!

I write to you today as your newly elected Council President. I am a little nervous and humbled to hold this position, while at the same time honored to be a steward of your trust as we begin this next century of Scouting for NWSC. I have been a Scout leader in NWSC since 1990 and have held many positions from Tiger Cub Parent to Assistant Cubmaster, Assistant Scoutmaster, and numerous District as well as Council Chairmanships and several Vice President positions plus being a Unit Commissioner and Council Commissioner. All of these positions have been meaningful and have added to the richness of my own personal Scouting experience. The best moments have been shared with so many great leaders, parents, and Scouts during summer camp, camporees, and other activities. As a Council, we are extremely fortunate to have the cadre of parents and leaders offering support and talent to our program and for our Scouts. Working on the Regional and National levels, I often remark about the strength and energy of our Council, especially the time and talent each of you lend to make this the great Council it is.

NWSC has always held high quality standards, and now as your President, I promise you two things: 1) to be prepared and 2) to do my best. I take these promises to heart and commit to give the best of my time, talent, and skills in helping NWSC in attaining its goals. Our Council Executive Committee is comprised of the Council Commissioner, Group Vice Presidents, Vice Presidents, Chairmen, and Professional Executives who are empowered to address the concerns of our members and to guard the quality of our programs. These Scouters are great individuals and effective leaders who will bring the best of themselves to serve you and the Scouts of NWSC. Our goal is simple...open the doors for the opportunity to join Scouting, have a safe environment to enjoy the program, and provide guidance in learning and embodying the values of Scouting; those of leadership, citizenship, and personal growth. We remain strong financially although it's a struggle for us as a Council, too. We know the worth of that struggle when you see our youth attain the Arrow of Light or Eagle Scout or Ranger Award. The success is mutually shared.

I look forward to serving as your President and continuing to serve NWSC. Together, we can make the difference in the lives of our youth and in our communities. Thank you for being a part and leading us into the next century of Scouting.

    So, happy birthday BSA!

    Marie Diffley
    Council President
