Philmont 2010
There are still a few slots available for the 2010 contingent. Planning is well underway. The contingent leader is Matt Grenning (T32). We plan to depart on July 8, by Amtrak Train #3 arriving at Philmont on July 10. The contingent will be returning by plane on July 22 arriving at O'Hare about 10 pm. If you are interested contact Bob McDermott (PhilmontNWSC@Aol.Com), Dick Engbrecht (engbrecht@comcast.net) or Brian Mulcrone (bmulcron@bsamail.org).

Philmont 2011

It's time to make your plans for Philmont 2011! Every summer, the NWSC takes a contingent of 60 Scouts and Scouters backpacking at this BSA High Adventure Base in the Sangre de Christo Mountains.

The 2011 trek is scheduled to arrive at Philmont on July 10 and depart Philmont on July 22. All Scouts must be 14 or older by September 1, 2011. The cost is estimated at $1450/person. A non-refundable, but transferable deposit is due with your application. Space is limited so reserve your spot early.

Sign-ups started Feb. 2, 2004. See the flyer posted at http://flyers.nwsc.org/C2011philmont.pdf for additional information.

Race to 2010 Travel Bug Pinewood Derby Cars
As of June 13, our “100th Anniversary of the BSA” car had logged 5815 miles but hasn't moved in the past month and is still sitting in a cache near Atlanta, GA. It is in fifth place for miles traveled but that doesn't mean much if it doesn't get to Jambo. Of course the car with over 14,000 miles on it (one trip from San Diego to Australia and back) is still sitting in California! Our second car, “Jambo or Bust”, was recently placed in a cache in South Barrington. Oh well. You can follow our cars' progress at http://www.geocaching.com/track/default.aspx and enter “NWSC” under “Search for a Trackable Item by Name.”

Other Trackable Items
NWSC adorned five additional Travel Bugs as part of the “Pillars of Scouting” series. We were given five dog tags entitled Achievement, Character, Leadership, Outdoors and Service. Each tag was affixed with a token item themed for each name. You can track these bugs by entering their ID #'s: TB36Z6M, TB36ZQ0, TB3704G, TB370G6, and TB36ZF8 into “Enter the Tracking Number of the Item:” at http://www.geocaching.com/track/default.aspx . They currently can be found in Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa and Arizona.

The Get in the Game Committee needs YOUR Help
Many of the Get in the Game Committee members are Jambo Scoutmasters or Scoutmaster Assistants, so time has been limited in getting some of the 100th Anniversary Scouting themed Geocaches placed. We are looking for some people interested in creating any of the five themed “Treasures of Scouting” Geocaches. The themes are: Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturing, Volunteers, and Alumni. Each cache will need to be a clear, Rubbermaid type container, containing themed items (patches, tokens, trinkets, etc) as well as some post cards that would be provided. Once the containers are created, we would place them at various locations throughout Council. If interested, please email geocachelakota@sbcglobal.net.

Geocaches at NWSC Eagle Projects
As part of the 100th Anniversary Celebration, Geocaches are being placed at Eagle Project locations around the country. There will be at total of twelve Cache to Eagle hides, each featuring a point of the Scout Law. Visit each cache, log the word, register your find at Geocaching.com and after finding all twelve submit the points of each corresponding cache. If you are correct, you will receive a commemorative Cache to Eagle patch. So far, two projects have been recognized in the Cache to Eagle program.

NWSC Cache to Eagle #5, GC27FN2
N 42° 06.823 W 088° 03.707
This two stage multi cache features two Eagle projects. The first is the stairway you can use to reach Stage 1. The stairs were installed in 2000 under the leadership of Ryan S. of Troop 182.
The final is in the Disc Golf course completed in 2004 by Nick T. of Troop 335.
Stage 1 is hidden in plain sight. If Stage 1 goes missing or you just want to give up, a back up Stage 1 is in a prickly spot 85' south. Bring your own pen to sign the log. Cache is placed with permission from the Palatine Park District. Park closes at dusk.
